How To Tie Off a Mojo Bag

Here's a nice little YouTube video detailing the proper way to tie shut a mojo bag.

And here's Part Two, which makes it a little easier to see the knotwork.

Keep in mind, though, that this is but one way to tie a mojo bag.  I'm not aware of one "correct and traditional way"; there are a lot of incorrect ways, though, where the contents are in danger of spilling out.

Thank you, Mojo Mike.  Give him a five-star rating if you don't mind!

Magical Recipes Using Common Household Ingredients

And Questions relating to Herb Substitutions

I get emails from time to time from various people who are on a budget inquiring about spell ingredients and spiritual supplies. Some of these questions include the following: Can I substitute this ingredient that I don't have or can't afford? Will the spell work if I leave out the herbs? Can I make this herb blend using just the three herbs I have instead of the five herbs in the spell? I only have enough money to buy a condition oil; can I just skip the herbs or the bath crystals?

These are all really good questions, and I completely sympathize with not having enough money to spend on sometimes-expensive spiritual supplies. So for all of you folks on a budget, I offer several recipes utilizing common household ingredients. Now you can blend your own spell herbs, magical powders, herbal baths, and anointing oils if you so choose. Before I give you the recipes, though, here are some quick answers to those questions I mentioned above.

How-To: Using Double-Action Candles

Love me some double action candles!  I use them all the time, and you should too!  I posted a cleansing and clearing ritual for New Year's, or really any time you're wanting to make a change, and in this ritual i suggested using a double action (DA) candle.  Here's a bit more info and a photo on the subject as using these types of candles can be a little confusing for the first-timer.  I also encourage you to Google "double action candles" as well, as there are other surely far more eloquent and far more thorough how-tos out there, probably with different tips and techniques.

So, double action (DA) candles are candles with two colors of wax sandwiched on top of each other - half black and half another color, usually white, red, or green.  You use these candles to move out the bad - banish, cleanse, reverse, remove - and invite in the good - bless, attract, improve, honor.  This is a very nice thing, and its usefulness should be apparent.

I use DA candles several times a year:  on New Year's Eve into New Year's Day (read the ritual linked above), during certain lifetime events involving change, and whenever i need to move out a bad spell of luck or sadness or an unfortunate event.  I find these candles are also nice for married folks or folks in a committed relationship, as there are rough spots from time to time which, when over and done with, are best cleaned up and swept away and a new chapter entered into.  When i quit smoking cigarettes i used a black and white DA in a ritual similar to the one given.  When i vowed to stop spending on my credit cards and start paying them down and basically be more financially responsible, i did some spiritual work using green and black DA.  When i made healing a priority in my life i used these candles again.  So they're quite useful, at least to me.

If you haven't already gathered, the different color choices for DA stand for different conditions.  Red and Black candles are used for love and relationship matters (marriage problems, divorce clearing, moving past a broken heart, removing damaging personal habits before starting a new relationship, etc.); Green and Black candles are for money and employment-related workings (changing irresponsible financial patterns, money worries, picking yourself back up after bankruptcy, living without alimony, monetary lawsuits, job concerns, etc.); and White and Black DAs are for everything else (spiritual work, healing, bad habits, miscellanea, etc.).

The black wax signifies that which you desire removed from your life.  The colored wax represents that which you desire and what you wish to attract/affirm in your life.  When you burn these candles, you first have to remove the bad/undesirable which means the black half first.  Now, i don't know what super genius first created these candles and why the major commercial suppliers haven't remedied this, but for some stupid reason, most DA candles have the black half on the bottom as shown in the candles on the right in the photo below.  It is then up to you to prepare your candle so the colored or white part is at the bottom and the black part is the top half with the wick.  This process is called butting the candle.

(About the photo: (Left to right)  Two taper candles, and while they are obviously not Double Actions, you can use them in a similar manner addressed below; a very special DA votive hand-made at Karma Zain Spiritual Supply, note that this candle is made correctly with the black on top and the white on the bottom - i highly recommend this brand both for ease of use and the fact it's righteously made; lastly, three traditional, commercially-available DA candles in white, green, and red - these are the guys you have to butt since the black is incorrectly on the bottom)

Now, butting the candle entails cutting off the existing colored/white tip of the candle, leveling that off so it makes a good base, and then whittling a new tip from the black end.  It sounds easy enough, but it's a bit more work than you'd think.  Don't let that discourage you, though, but keep a few things in mind:

~ Use a proper knife.  This is not the job to tackle with some sort of ritual knife - you know the ones with the decorative handles such as dragons and wizards, rhinestoned eyes, brass celtic knotwork, etc.  You need a real knife such as a chef's knife or a working bowie knife, something like a Ka-Bar.  To chop off the tip cleanly to make the new base I use a smooth-edged kitchen knife which i hold over a hot burner to heat the blade.  I then, pressing downward, use it to push through the candlewax, then re-warm the knife blade, turn the candle, and press down again, making my way around the candle.  I find this more effective than sawing through it with a serrated blade for this wax is usually brittle and prone to chunking off.

~ Butting a DA candle is not necessarily hallowed high ritual work - it's not overly glamorous, witchy-poo, incense smoke and chanting type work, at least to me.  I actually prepare the candle before i start the working as a separate chore.  I just find sawing through a thick candle and whittling a new tip not conducive to prayer and meditative altered states.  To me this is prep work, sort of like wiping down your working altar and gathering bowls and other mundane equipment.  It takes about 15 minutes to do the job, and the colored candle wax dye rubs off on your hands making a mess - not to mention the pile of wax shavings from whittling the new tip.

So do this a few times just because it builds experience and character,  but then you may want to search out a candlemaker like the one i linked above who makes DA candles with the black half on top.

There are numerous ways to dress a DA candle.  Here is one such method:

After butting the candle, carve the things you wish to remove into the wax on the black half.  It can be words or a short statement, a list, names, and you can repeat these negative conditions once or over and over covering the black part of the candle.  Next, carve the things you wish to invite or things you wish to replace the bad with on the white/colored half.  Again, this can be a list or some statement such as "My Perfect Lover" or "Financial Freedom" or "Good Luck," whatever.  Take a removal-type oil such as Banishing or Cast Off Evil and use it to anoint the black half with.  Use downward strokes while speaking your removal petition, being careful not to get any oil on the colored/white half.  Wash your hands.  Then use your "good" oil on the colored/white half.  This can be a Blessing or Healing oil or it can be specific to your desires such as Love Come To Me, Wealthy Way, or Fast Luck.  Anoint this half working upwards and speaking your blessing/attraction petition.

These jumbo double action candles (the ones pictured to the far right) can take anywhere from six to twelve hours to burn.  They also need a special holder for they're about twice the width of a normal taper, and i recommend putting the whole thing, candleholder and all, in a metal cake pan or rimmed cookies sheet as this candle puts out a lot of wax drippings.

On the subject of wax drippings, it is traditional to remove the candle of its black wax drippings and remnants.  This is done once the black half of the candle is burnt down.  Just pick off the trails of blak wax and the puddles surrounding the candle being careful not to upset the candle or burn yourself.  It makes sense to do so as the black wax signifies the condition(s) you're removing, and you want to have no trace of it.  If you do not remove these black wax drippings, they will mix with the white wax and you will be left with a big puddle of gray wax.  Gray wax is not what you want as a future outcome; you want shiny, virginal, pure white wax.  Just pick of the trails and puddles of black wax and dispose of them; i'd suggest burying them off your property or at a crossroads.  You can also throw the black wax away in a dumpster - not your own trash containers - or use this black wax immediately in other removal/cleansing spellwork.  Once the black wax is removed, the rest of the wax remnants will be white and these can be used in a number of ways: add them to a mojo bag, make up a packet amulet, place them on an altar, or bury them by your front door.

SInce the jumbo candles take so long to burn, you can burn these types of candles in stages - a little bit each day.  Divide the candle into seven equal sections and mark them off with little lines dug into the wax.  The fourth section, the middle section, will be half black and half white.  This is a particularly nice way to burn these candles as it gives you time to pray and reflect on your changes.  For the first three days while the black part of the candle burns, you pray/focus/do spellwork on removal.  On the fourth day, as the black wax gives away to the white, you shift your focus to saying a final goodbye to the old and then welcome in the good.  On days five through seven, the white wax days, your work is on blessing and change.  In this way it is kind of like working with a glass-encased vigil light.  You have seven days of intense prayer and focus on your goal.  I like to combine this with spiritual bathing, especially one days one, four, and seven.

The votive light in the middle of the photo has a lot of benefits.  One, you don't have to butt the light since the black wax is on top; two, the candle burns in far less time, around two to five hours.  This may be just what you want: a candle to burn all in one day.  When working with a DA votive, you obviously have less space to carve your petition, but still do so because there's still plenty of room.  Also dress it with the two different oils being careful not to mix them.  I also recommend not burning a DA votive in a typical glass votive holder.  If you do, the candle will melt into the holder as it's designed to do, and you won't be able to pick out the black wax when it comes time to do so.  When you're burning magical votives that are all one color wax, as most are, it's fine and preferable to burn them in a votive holder; it's just the DA's that get treated differently.  Burn them in the middle of a metal cake pan or a rimmed cookie sheet and they'll be safe and you'll be able to happily pick away at the black wax remnants.

Now, if you really want to burn a double action but you don't have one on-hand, then by all means use two separate taper candles: one black and one white.  You can do exactly the same thing and have the same end result; it's just not as cool-looking or as novel, but two separate candles does have its benefits.  For one, you don't have to butt the darn things; two, separate candles are easier to carve and anoint; and three, collecting and disposing of the black wax remnants is also way easier.  So don't let your lack of a special DA jumbo or votive prevent you from doing this type of work.  Treat the two tapers as instructed above; then once the black candle is just about to go out, say a prayer of transformation, that out of the bad the good is birthed, then light your white candle from the almost-extinguished black candle-puddle, and do your thing.

Okay.  I think that's about all.  Any questions?  Ask away.  Have anything to add?  I'd love to know.

Basic Lodestone Information and One Way to Fix a Pair to Draw a New Lover

To my dear Lodestone-purchasers, Lodestone-inquirers, and Lodestone-lovers, here is the long-awaited guide i have promised several you for the past few months.  Sorry to be such a slacker!

Lodestones, also called Magnetite, are natural magnets.  They are stones made from iron ore which act like real magnets: they have positive and negative sides and edges and exhibit drawing powers.  Because of these magnetic characteristics, Lodestones have been used in folk magic when a person desires to draw something into their life such as money, business, a new lover, more sex, good luck, and the like.  Lodestones are worked with singly or in a pair.

A single Lodestone is used to draw money, business, luck, or success.  I have an extra large Lodestone on my money altar in my home along with other money-drawing curios and amulets:  one of my prosperity Treasure Maps, a 3-leg frog, a pyramid candle, some affirmation cards, a large chunk of Pyrite, etc.  When I go to pay my bills, I am reminded to pray and do simple spiritual work for my family's prosperity.  Part of this ritual includes caring for my Money Lodestone - read on for more info.

Lodestones can be either male or female.  Pairs of Lodestones are worked to draw in a new lover or to keep a current relationship strong.  When worked in pairs, you chose a Lodestone of your own gender and a Lodestone gendered the same as your current or desired mate.  Male Lodestones are more pointed, elongated, phallic, pyramid in shape.  Female Lodestones are more squat, rounded, or cube-shaped.  Generally the Lodestone pair are of a similar size, and oftentimes the female stone is a touch smaller.  One can work with male-female pairs, male-male pairs, or female-female pairs depending on your persuasion and the gender of lover you wish to attract.   Here's a photo of a pair of Lodestones.  The male stone is on the left; notice how it is pointed and pyramid-shaped.  The female stone is on the right; she is squatter and more cube-shaped.

Matching Lodestones into compatible pairs is a bit of an undertaking.   The pair should be roughly the same size and fit together nicely.  Where the pair fits together, they also must attract to each other strongly - not repel each other.  You can see this phenomenon with the aid of Magnetic sand, finely powdered iron filings, which clings to the magnetic edges and sides of the Lodestones and forms "hairs."  You can see this phenomenon in the photo above.

Lodestones should be cared for regularly, and this task is a joy for their owners.  They can be named and can be placed prominently in one's household, proudly in the middle of an altar or mantle piece.  Or you can secrete your Lodestones to do your magical love or money work in private.  It is traditional to anoint your stones regularly with an appropriate Condition Oil.  Van Van Oil is a traditional choice.  I also make some excellent Lodestone-anointing Condition Oils entitled Lodestone Love Oil and Lodestone Money Oil which are specially formulated for the stones.  After anointing your Lodestones, they need to be fed.  Lodestones are fed by sprinkling a pinch of Magnetic Sand on them.  The Magnetic Sand clings to the stone and makes neat formations.  Many practitioners pray a prayer of gratitude while they feed their Lodestones.  One such prayer is, "(Name of Lodestone), as I feed you, may you feed my need for (fill in the blank:  Love, Money, etc.)."

Here is one of my personal set of Lodestones.  They are in a non-metal dish (you don't want the dish to drain the stones) with appropriate complementary love herbs and curios.  It is nice to have a Lodestone dish of sorts which you can add items to when appropriate such as dried flowers from your mate and other sentimentals.

Here's a ritual to fix up a new pair of Lodestones to personalize your stone and work the "perfect mate" stone to find you a new lover or spouse.

What are Sachet Powders (Magical Powders) and How do I use Them?

This how-to has been a long time coming.  In the past six months i have written probably a dozen separate emails to a dozen separate clients and querrants on this very subject: Exactly what are those magic powders and what do i do with them?  For those who know, and who love and use sachet powders, i apologize for the review.

Sachet powders are a versatile magical product.  The powders i make, with a few exceptions, consist of ground botanicals and minerals, condition oils, and pure talc.  I do not tint my sachet powders, but some makers do and that is generally accepted and expected.  Thus you would have pinkish powders for a love sachet, and mint green powder for a money-drawing sachet and the like.  Oftentimes sachet powders are scented but not overwhelmingly so.  Powders are meant to be used subtley, and you won't find them (or you shouldn't) in day-glo yellow strongly scented of Pina Colada.  Sachet Powders are also a bit labor intensive to make and a little goes a long way, so that's why i (and other makers) sell them in smaller quantities and/or for slightly more money than the same quantity of another magical product such as bath salts.

Sachet powders are just one type of magical powders.  Magical powders can be further broken-down into several sub-groups:  All-herb powders; All-mineral powders; All-zoological powders; and blended powders: a varying mixture of herbs, minerals, and animal curios depending on the formula (this is the category sachet powders fall into).

All-herb powders are simply made from plant material ground down to a fine dust.  This can be accomplished quite nicely with a coffee bean grinder for most plant materials.  Certain roots and parts are too hard, though, and i use a hand-cranked grist mill to get the job done.  While you can easily do the job yourself and make your own all-herb powders, this type of powder is not typically offered commerically.  It does take a suprising amount of plant matter to make a few tablespoons of powder, but this should not stop you from grinding your own.  Many folks enjoy using a mortar and pestle thereby putting a little elbow grease into the creation of their personalized spiritual supplies.  There are many pre-ground herbs available in commerce and many of them make a nice base for your own all-herb powders.  Frequently these are offered as cooking spices and non-combustible incenses.  Examples are Sandalwood powder, powdered Benzoin, and ground Cinnamon.

Examples of all-mineral powders would be magical dirts such as graveyard dirt and church dirt as well as magical minerals such as ash, sulphur, saltpetre, and brick dust.  A lot of times these ingredients are kept seperate and used by themselves or are blended with other botanicals in various formulas.

All-zoological powders are similar in use to all-mineral powders.  They are typically used alone or blended with complementary herbs to create a formula.  An example of a zoological powder would be crab shell powder.  You could use that powder by itself for reversing work, or you could make your own blended Reversing Powder and add other ground reversing herbs and minerals.  Other animal-based powders include ground snake sheds and snake meat, dried and powdered insects, and crushed bone.

Blended powders are made with an assortment of ingedients: mineral, plant, and animal.  Sachet powders are an example of a blended powder as most of them contain talc, a mineral, and plenty of ground botanicals mixed in.  Some blended powders also include animal products.  Most goofer dust recipes, a blended powder, call for nasty ingedients such as sulphur and pepper as well as snake skin and ground insects.  In some hoodoo spells, the practitioner is directed to powder a dirt dauber's nest.  This would be a type of blended powder as the dirt/wood pulp nest is a mineral and the ground insect larvae is an animal specimen.

Note that when a powder is labeled "Sachet" that means it is a "nice" powder appropriate to dust your body with.  One of the many uses of sachet powders is as a magical body powder similar to the use of condition oils as a magical perfume.  You would never dust your own body with one of the other more sinister powders (note, not called "sachet") such as Crossing Powder, Hot Foot Powder, or goofer dust.  Those powders are meant to be thrown for another person, not to be worn by you to infuse your own self with their nastiness.  This is just a reminder that all powders are not meant to be used the same way.  Here are some common ways to employ sachet and other magical powders:

Use powders to dress papers.  This is where sachet powders shine.  You can't dress papers with condition oils unless you want a telltale oily splotch.  Sachet powders can be lightly sprinkled on papers, prayed over, and then you run your fingers around and through the powdered papers, working towards you for attraction, and then the excess is tamped off.  This is the perfect method to get your magic into the hands of your target.  Powder your resume before giving it to prospective employers.  Dress business cards with Attraction or Better Business Sachet Powder.  Work some Saty With Me powder or Reconciliation onto your next love letter.  Fix magic money by sprinkling Money Come To Me Sachet Powder on your paper money each night.  The uses go on and on.
Don't forget to dress the backsides of documents, too, where they will be touched the most.

Use sachet powders to sprinkle on the ground where they will work their magic and/or where your target will walk over them.  Use sachet powders as a magical carpet sprinkle; set down a light dusting of Protection or Peaceful Home Sachet Powder after spiritually cleansing your home.  You can also place pinches of powder in the four corners of each room or in your home to magically seal your property.  Sneakily sprinkle powders where your target will step over or touch.  Lay down some Look Me Over or Love Me Sachet Powder to get you noticed by your intended.  Dust your troublesome neighbor's stoop with Hot Foot Powder to move them out!  When sprinkling sachet powders on the ground, be sure to mix them with some of the local dirt to make the powder less conspicuous.

Sachet Powders have many uses and are indespensable in spell work.  Use sachet powders to dress your candles with after anointing them with an oil.  Sachet powders are easier to apply to candles than crushed herbs and burn better as well.  You can mix any number of sachet powders with other herbs or herb blends to make a totally customized botanical spell blend.  Dress name papers, prayer papers, and petition papers with corresponding sachet powders.  Add a pinch to the center of your packet when folding these magical papers up into an amulet.  Sachet powders are convenient to use in container spells; add a pinch or a spoon to bottle spells, sweetening jars and other jar spells, and when added to a mojo bag, the powder gradually and slowly sifts out, infusing your person with its magic.  Magical powders are also wonderful to lay out symbols on an altar or to sprinkle the whole working space.  They lend their essence quite marvelously that way.  Many practitioners encircle their candles and spell implements with sachet powders to reinforce and concentrate the magical energies.

Wear sachet powders as a magical body powder much in the same way folks wear condition oils as a magical perfume.  One advantage of wearing sachet powders is they are typically much lighter scented than oils.  This is great if you don't particularly like the scent of an oil you wish to use, say if it's a little too feminine for your taste; you can then try to wear the sachet powder.  You may add a spoonful of magical powder to a container of regular body powder to stretch it out, or you can use this method if you wish to get some magic into an unwitting target (such as Stay With Me Sachet Powder in your roving husband's foot powder).  Sachet powders can also be applied to your body uncut using your hands or a clean powderpuff or feather duster.

Thus concludes our quick survery of the background and usage of magical powders.  I'm sure i forgot quite a few things, so i welcome any suggestions.
